Restaurant POS Equipment: Types of input devices
That the choice of input devices for use as a restaurant, sale of material should be one of the important tasks in the checklist. The choice whether to go with a touch screen or a programmable keyboard saves time and money. The only market where keyboards are used principally food is because it has the ability to program individual keys for specific item codes and prices. The touch screen is more intuitive to use than keyboards for many users. Touch screens also provides the flexibility of user interface and programming, which eliminates costly staff training. Touch screen best sellers these days are based on flat TV screens instead of traditional CRT monitors. Although the touch screen LCD are a bit 'more expensive (usually $ 600 – $ 1,000 instead of $ 400 – $ 500), which are more resistant, use less energy and space savings. They are also much better. With both CRT and LCD displays, avoid "overlay" touch screen, in addition to regular monitor – are more prone to bugs and add an unnecessary complication to the system. For keyboards. The others are smaller, more POS-specific devices such as flat panel membrane switches that are typically found in fast food. Often, POS keyboards come with a function of magnetic stripe readers for processing credit cards. Most programmable keyboards usually go for between $ 150 and $ 300. Never mind that the POS equipment in use, be sure to consider the environment in which they will be used. Both keyboards and touch screens are available with different levels of dust and spill-proofing.
All scanners work the same basic form, reading a barcode and sends the information to the computer. Usually the connection to the system via S-connectors called wedges that make them function as an extension of the keyboard. Bar codes can improve the speed and accuracy during the verification. Low-end scanners are based on charge coupled device (CCD) technology. That cost less, but generally have a very short range – an article should be acquired to be 1 to 3 inches from the scanner. In a typical retail sale, all right. Laser scanner uses a beam of light to read bar codes, which provide a greater capacity for analysis because they are able to crawl over long distances. Some laser scanners are "auto-sensing, which means becoming a factor when it is in front of them, scan the code and then close it again. Omnidirectional scanners send 15 or 20 lasers simultaneously, allowing you to scan bar codes from any angle. And the top of the line includes scanners that are commonly seen in supermarkets is under the counter. Properlu use different types of scanners to serve customers. If you do not usually have more than one client or two in line, CCDs or entry-level laser scanner must be able to do the job. In a relatively constant flow of customers can use a template to automatically detect transanctions accelerate sales, and companies with high volume should investigate omnidirectional or embedded scanners. Prices range from under $ 100 for most of the CCD-based scanner $ 350 or more for omnidirectional laser scanners.
The last type of input device is handheld, wireless terminals. Basically, a PDA, you can take orders and transmit wirelessly back to a base station. A big advantage of POS equipment can provide a restaurant is to increase the amount of time spent on the servers taking orders on the floor and interact with customers, eliminating the need to return to a terminal to process orders. More recently, writes into the world of portable computers: thought, combined with touch screen PDA, this small input device that the server can simply write orders. Handwriting recognition software parses the order then sends to the kitchen and bar, if necessary. Appliances are more expensive than traditional touch terminals for the big screen. However, they can offset the cost of customer upselling more desserts and beverages. If you are evaluating hand-held terminals, be sure to ask for proof of "fall" – units are classified according to the hardness according to the amount that can survive a fall. To see if your business is a candidate for handheld POS terminals, POS equipment suppliers compare more to see what products and services offered.
